A Jim-Buoy life ring that onces served a purpose ready for action and now that it’s retired would look great on a big wall inside a home. It has the names Nantucket and Woods Hole stenciled on the front, with a factory stamp that dates its production at November 1, 1984. Its weathered surface gives it the character and individuality we love in a piece of art.

From the Steamship Authority ferry M/V Nantucket, it connects to a familiar part of island life. The ferry entered service in 1974 and has served both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The Woods Hole lettering is consistent with a port identification, rather than a particular route.

For so many families, the crossing is part of the memory: summer sun on the deck, salt air, cold winter passages and the anticipation of arriving. Familiar aboard a ferry, this retired maritime object takes on a different presence in a home, carrying those associations into everyday life.

We added the rope shown in the photographs to accompany the ring.
