STORY
John Austin’s view toward Brant Point Light from inside Nantucket Harbor. Pale sand, weathered timber and beach grass lead the eye toward the lighthouse, where the channel rounds the bend and opens into Nantucket Sound. A familiar sight for anyone who has arrived on or left the island by water.
Austin’s collectors included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. A John Austin painting from her estate with a different view of Brant Point Light sold at Sotheby’s in 1996 for a reported $29,900.

CONDITION
Painting: Subtle surface marks and variations in tone are visible in the pale sky. The reverse shows discoloration and marks. Please review the close-up photographs for detail.
Frame: The artist’s handmade wooden frame shows age-related wear, discoloration and spotting. The white inner surround is painted wood, bordered by an outer frame that appears to be gray-stained wood. These details contribute to the piece’s character.
