We were drawn to the lettering and worn wood before we knew anything about Henry E. Case. Researching the name led us to a 1931 school yearbook advertisement from Long Island. There he was: an electrical contractor in Cutchogue, with the same Peconic 201 telephone number painted on this sign. We feel lucky to have found that connection. It’s good to be able to put a little of its history back with the piece.

STORY

A double-sided wood plank sign for Henry E. Case, an electrician in Cutchogue on Long Island’s North Fork. Black lettering advertises fixtures, appliances, lamps and radio, with “Tel. Peconic 201” beneath his name. Three horizontal boards sit within a dark wooden frame, with metal hanging loops along the top.

Researching the sign led us to advertisements in Southold High School’s 1931 and 1932 yearbooks. Both name Henry E. Case as an electrical contractor in Cutchogue and give the same Peconic 201 telephone number. That match connects the sign to a documented local business. We believe the sign dates to around the 1930s; its exact production date is unknown.

Each side has worn differently. The visible grain, faded lettering, marks and paint splashes are part of what we like about it. A strong piece for a home, studio or workspace, with enough detail to reward a closer look.

CONDITION
