STORY

A sign like this promised something simple: ice cream ahead.

And with it, a reason to smile. Alfred Eisenstaedt’s 1939 photograph of two young Culver Academy students enjoying their cones captures that feeling beautifully.

It’s what drew us to this oversized, hand-painted shop sign. A pink-and-cream scoop sits above a golden-yellow waffle cone, finished with a small white starburst. Painted on both sides, each face has its own brushwork, with softened colors, worn edges and aged metal fittings adding character.

Its side fittings suggest it once projected from a shopfront, visible from either direction. Its exact age and origin remain unknown; the photograph is paired with it for the feeling they share.

A little nostalgia, color and simple happiness brought indoors.

CONDITION

Vintage

Weathered condition with paint wear and losses, scratches, surface cracking, edge chips and areas of exposed wood. Wear differs between the two painted faces. The metal mounting fittings show corrosion, surface wear and remnants of paint. Please review the detailed photographs.
