STORY

Sun-faded orange, worn black lettering and a bold circular form. This Jim-Buoy life ring carries the names Nantucket and Woods Hole, with a factory stamp that appears to date it to November 1, 1984. Its weathered surface gives it the presence and individuality we love in a piece of art.

Believed to have come from the Steamship Authority ferry Nantucket, it connects to a familiar part of island life. The ferry entered service in 1974 and has served both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The Woods Hole lettering is consistent with a port identification, rather than a particular route.

For so many families, the crossing is part of the memory: summer sun on the deck, salt air, cold winter passages and the anticipation of arriving. Familiar aboard a ferry, this retired maritime object takes on a different presence in a home, carrying those associations into everyday life.

We added the rope shown in the photographs to accompany the ring. Its softened orange, faded stencil and worn surface remain the heart of the piece.
