STORY

The 1978 Collins edition of Peter Beard’s The End of the Game, paired with a Peter Beard: 50 Years of Portraits exhibition brochure from The Time Is Always Now in New York.

The book brings together photographs and writing about Africa’s wildlife and changing landscape. Its elephant-cover dust jacket shows the wear of years of handling. The accompanying brochure features a portrait of Beard and a preface by exhibition curator Peter T. Tunney, dated April 1999.

Tucked between two pages, we found an unexpected assortment of newspaper fragments and small objects, seemingly placed there deliberately. Perhaps a previous owner was inspired by Beard’s own way of collecting and combining the everyday. Who placed them there, and when, remains unknown.

CONDITION

Pre-owned vintage

Visible age and wear. The dust jacket has rubbing, creasing, edge tears and small losses, particularly around the corners and spine ends. Toning and scattered spotting are visible on the opening pages, with a small handwritten notation near the top of the half-title page. The brochure shows light handling wear. The loose newspaper fragments are torn, discolored and stained. Please review the detailed photographs for the condition of each piece.
